RS=column or cable shift selectors
FS=extension housing mounted shift lever
4/5=number of forward gears
C=close ratios  (ie 2.9 and 3.36 first gears) W= wider ratios (3.6, 3.9 4.2
first gears)
71 distance between shaft centres
I understand that the A,B, & C are the generation models of the box but open
to correction?

No, 240Z's used 3 types of 5-speed, all close ratio (FS5_C_ not FS5_W_):

Up to mid' 71 - FS5C71A (same as Roadster but different bell and
extension housings

 From mid '71 to end '71 - FS5C71B, rare flange ouput type

 From end '71 - FS5C71B, sleeve output, also used in 260Z

The 'A', 'B' or 'C' at the end of the box ID basically indicates the
type of extension housing/shifter arrangement.
