Nat,
if you read the CAMS book, its really a grey area. I only have a 2000
one but right at the start of the rules for group3c it lists a section on
adding material or parts. Whereby its not allowed unless specified in the
specific sections, so really your not allowed to.... but if you call the
head spacer a head gasket you could probably get away with it though. It
says head gaskets are free, lol.... lets all call it a another head
gasket.... :))
It does say in there that pre 1986 2wd have free engine capacity so long
as its within the homologated engine block which says to me you can have
the biggest bore and stroke as you like so long and you can fit it, it
doesn't say you can't put a head spacer on to do this....... :))
However even boring an engine beyond 0.6mm or changing the rods is
unclear in the manual, yet everyone does it. It does say the crank is
free... but doesn't mention the rods or bore are...infact it says the
opposite.
If you really read it(not easy!), it says you can't overbore more than
0.6mm that would mean a bore of 86.6mm(standard L18 datsun spec oversize
bore of 86mm + 0.6mm) using standards prepped rods and any crank stroke
you like. What rally engines comply with this?! not many. Who'd want to?
:P
I remember reading the rules for the first time being really confused as
to what you can and can't do. I guess you can either build what you think
is right or ask CAMS first then build what they will let you run. Where's
the fun in that tho, being told what you can and can't do... I'm spewing
I missed the Group G rally days, they sound like a lot of fun just
building let alone driving.
I'm looking forward to seeing the new prototype cars like Neil Bates's
GT4 inspired Corolla. Hopefully a Peugeot 206, Ford Focus, Holden
Astra/Vectra and other versions too... i'm a bit sick of Scooby-doo's and
Sir lance a lots.
cheers,
Craig.
