Richard, Sounds like a fun weekend - you've got to tell yourself the gasket was blown or on the way out and needed changing anyway, in any case it's always good practice (-: The only Datto things I did this weekend was to clean mine, it was long overdue and it'll be 10 kph quicker next week.
Thanks for the correction on the technical post - It looks like I started writing "both valves shut" and changed my line of thought to both lobes pointing up and in the end wrote a combination of both which is of course garbage - I also missed the error on the way in from the list as I usually re-read what I write especially if it's technical advise. Busy weekend here too but I always seem to find time for a daily dose of Datto speak. L20B dizzy. The wider half moon to the rear suggests that the L20B drive shaft installs in exactly the same position as the L16/L18 so #1 plug lead must also on the front of the cap. I thought this was the case but I've read other posts telling us that the L20B dizzy is around the other way. I could be getting confused with a Bluebird S2 electronic dizzy install on an early L20B - I've done this installation on a L18 (many times) and the orientation doesn't change. I did OK on the list of tools? and didn't miss anything? regards Terry -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Richard Clough Sent: Sunday, 4 August 2002 10:21 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: head gasket change Having done it twice this weekend, I'm very familiar with all this. You've got it right Terry, the Cam Sprocket bolt is a 19mm. When setting the engine to TDC on #1 cylinder, I would have said "both CAM LOBES" pointing up (ie valves shut on firing stroke). and, Looking down the dizzy drive hole, the dizzy drive should line up at 11.25 (as per the clock), looking from the LHS, with the larger "half moon" on the right. The rotor should point toward the lower left quadrant, approx. in a line with the dizzy cap's retaining clips. This is the setting you need to get if you pull off the oil pump and its drive (which is also the dizzy drive). ----- Original Message ----- From: "Terry Rudd" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Saturday, 3 August 2002 13:37 PM Subject: RE: head gasket change > James, > > Most of the manuals are reasonably useful with changing a head gasket but > what most of the manuals don't cover is a few preliminary steps to make > changing a head gasket a lot easier to get everything back together right, > especially the timings.
