When I did as you have said to do on many occasions.
Remove the external reg and pull the plug apart and only connect the Indicator Light 
wire from the Bosch Alternator to White/Red
wire on the loom side of the plug.
It cooked the earth wire on mine.
Maybee I got the wrong wire but it has been charging fine since I kept the old 
external regulator pluged in.
I just have to give it a quick stab when I start her.
Ohh well one day Terry might come to Perth and fix mine for me.
