Hi Mark,

Just to add to Chris's response, modern cars have factory stereos which
change their illumination when you turn your headlights on - to know the
lights are on they need a signal from the illumination circuit. Hence when
you replace the head unit you have this 'extra' wire that doesnt seem to
do much so it is assumed to be extraneous, or hooked up to the wrong thing
etc, resulting in fuses blowign etc. this wire from the illumination
circuit is generally simply 0V that goes to +12V when you turn your
headlights on. Hope this explains why the illumination circuit has to do
with a stereo a bit better.
