Hi Mark,

Yep the sharing wire thing is definitely possible - replaced a few 
factory headunits that have had weird stuff like this! i think holdens 
do this a lot??

Did the stereo you replaced change its level of contrast when the 
lights were turned on? If not, then it probably wasnt hooked up to 
the illumination, and if thats the case Im stuck.

Having a squiz at the wiring diagram (from a workshop manual, 
public library etc) would help take out the guesswork too.
