Jimmy,
Its
not the thicker wheel that caused the problem it was the increased offset.
For
wheel widths to use with R31 struts, check with Baz at Datsport as he does
this conversion with R31 struts all the time and would have done the
measurements to advise you..
Choosing rim diameters and offsets should normally involve some
basic measurements, starting with point of intersection of strut upper
mount and ball joint to standard ride height road surface.
This
point gives you the point the tyre should pivot around for 0 scrub radius.
Normally your car has the point of intersection coinciding with the middle of
the tyre contact patch or reasonably close to it. As you choose
different rim diameters and offsets, this will move the centre point of the
rubber out or in from this point with consequent handling
changes.
If the
contact patch centre is well out from the centre line of the strut and ball
joint (increased scrub radius offset) that produces the symptoms I
described.

Errol
so a thinner wheel gives better stability at speed and is easier at turning
in?
I would have thought the thicker wheels gave greater contact area and
better control at speed.
So what is the best wheel width to use on a 1600 with r31 struts mate?
I take it you have made and driven a few like these?

Andrew,
In my experience the following occurred, steering was stiffer to turn,
stability probs at speed (increased toe out from drag) and wheel shimmy at
certain road speeds.
Not a pleasant experience.

Gday Chris,
Yeah I would think the steering would be heavier - given that the
majority of the extra rim width is distributed out more than in, if you
know what I mean, resulting in the centre of the tyre contact patch
being further out. Errol or one of the other guys has proba! ! bly driven
with this sort of configuration and might be able to give an indication of
how much of an effect it has on steering.
