It looks like you already tore it apart, Joe, but my 85 190D did 
that rather frequently - I needed to be authoritative with the reset
button otherwise it would get confused and click. If it started
clicking, I could just push the button in all the way, and it would
stop clicking and start counting miles.

There is probably something internally broken, since neither of my 87s 
do that, but it's been like that for going on two years now, and it used
to be a 550+ mile per week car before I took it off the road.

I'd be curious to hear what you find if you tear the cluster apart.
