I don't know about S and C, but W means Werksbezeichnung, or "factory name". The LWB sedan variants and the R Class are prefixed V for Verlangerte, "extended".

There's a new prefix in town, too. X, for, I guess, SUV variants of existing models. The GLK is an X204 and the GL is an X164.
