The good news is that peak usage now is mid-afternoon. If we can keep people from plugging in at 5:30 when they get home, and do it when they go to bed instead, it's possible that the existing grid could absorb a lot of electric passenger cars. If we can use time of day metering to encourage people to charge their cars at nighttime rates it would help.
