In the not-quite-perfect world in which I reside, Our military is an
important protection against the dangers of the real world. Our volunteer
military will not accept those who do not have normal or better
intelligence. No doubt our country's leaders do not always wield the power
of our military in an intelligent and productive manner; but we are a lot
better off with them than we would be without them.
One of my sons just completed USCG basic training. Even after winnowing the
applicants with testing, background checks and physical exams; nearly 10% of
the class couldn't cut it. I have worked closely with our local USCG unit
in Portland OR, and was seconded to that unit for 90 days a few years ago.
I had the privilege of working with some of the most dedicated and competent
individuals I have ever met.
Browse the net and take a look at the work of some of the USCG SAR and
rescue swimmer units (to take two examples out of thousands) and tell me
again that you think these guardian-heroes are "retarded kids" in "the
welfare line".

our modern volunteer standing army is just another welfare line. it is jsut

on this list the american imperialism and war profiteering is what makes me
free. i disagree not only that this could possibly make us free but also
with the notion that this is any longer a particularly free country. as
long as the american people continue to capitulate to tyranny, we will
become less and less free. no number of innocent iraqis tortured or
murdered for fun and profit is going to change that. only active mass
resistance to the civil authorities can change that, not mass murder.
now i will be encouraged to move to albania for dissent. only thing is that
this is my country too even if pitiful fools try to make it into a
totalitarian plutocracy and think they are doing god's work in the process.

I have no real opinion about the issue, but I think that there could
be some rationale that could be elucidating to discuss, if it were not
so inflammatory. While we may not like to hear the dialog, these
types of thoughts are not expressed from a mind with a vacuum inside,
but from a mind with a reason - I mean, it is known that there are
plenty of veterans here, hence, that type of rhetoric does not come
without forethought, really. If that type of rhetoric does come
without forethought, then we agree, there is a mind with a vacuum
inside. Perhaps we could listen prior to our flame throwers? We all
have our reasons, don't we? Let's shoot the redcoats, not the army of
the republic.
