why would it use more fuel all other things being equal?

My question is why would MB want to turbo the 240D? I would think that a
turboed version would use the same amount of fuel as a 300D if not more. The
only reason I can think of is in commercial applications where there is not
enough room for the 5 cylinder motor but more power was required.

I have a line on a 1982 240D that I may be interested in. It has a turbo

it. Owner who is the original says it was put on I believe after market.
1. Any one have experience with this please.
All the reports I've had from mechanics (except for one ;-) say they
destroy engines rapidly.
2. Was the four banger designed to allow and run properly witht his type

NO!
I do not believe it was offered from the German factory but was put on
later
in 1982 as a kit?
That's correct. Mercedes was able to up power 50% by adding a turbo (80
hp to 120 hp in the OM617 engine) with NO loss of longevity while the
aftermarket turbos were limited to about 15% and engine longevity was
seriously compromised. The turbo engines share VERY few parts with the
non-turbo versions.
Any words of wisdom please.
There is a 240D turbo that's commonly available in India - uses
appropriate turbo engine parts and I'm told they have more power than a
non-turbo OM617 engine.
If you need more power than a 240D delivers, seriously consider a 300D.
