My '83 300D has the alternator attached to a bracket which has three bolts;
two holding the alternator and one pivoting the bracket IIRC. If all bolts
aren't tight the belt can get loose, but mine has never gotten as loose as
yours seem to be. I would wonder if the bracket might be broken or the
adjuster stripped and the bolts loose. The pivot bolt has to be tightened at the back IIRC even though there is a nut on the front of the bracket.

My wife started off on a road-trip halfway across the state Friday, in
the Chicken Wagon ('83 300D) and called because the car was shrieking
at her. Very displeased she headed back home whereupon I tightened
the alternator belt, which had (somehow) gotten just about as loose as
it could be.  Odd.

Sunday she was headed back, and said that for the last few miles it
was starting to chirp again. I checked this morning and the belts
were completely loose again. Whatever's supposed to hold the belt
adjustment in place is not doing so, I'll have to look into that. I
tightened it up again, it'll hold for a bit anyway.

Anybody know what's supposed to keep that screw adjuster from backing
off?
