In my 87 TD, the leak was in the low pressure hose. It should have been
replaced as part of Andrews rebuild/refurb of the system. When the LP hose
leaks, you don't notice it, except maybe some oil spots on the pavement
where you park, but by far most of it goes on the road while driving. Amy
wetness on the hose, and it should be replaced.
You CAN use transmission cooler hose from FLAPS, or, of course Q has the
real thing.

The total system capacity is only a couple liters, so it can
sneak into the crankcase and may not be notice. Also, because

Absolutely. Also note that the returning fluid. Unless the
system is pressurizing the shock/accumulators, there will be
fluid returning from the line connected to the tank cap where it
runs through the filter on it's way into the tank.
I had a hose develop a pin-hole leak in the high-pressure hose
crossing the engine. This made a mess, though, so I don't think
it's your problem.
