Wilton,
IMO your background type of background is what many children do not have. Living in a 'materialism poor" environment, gave you the desire and perseverance many never people develop. There have so many crazy approaches to child rearing over the years and few advocated discipline and hard word. The latest rounds of things like -- no grades, no winners/losers, everyone passes, is such nonsense - none of these approaches prepare children for what the world will be like.

This kind of "logic" is what is driving the OWS types who demand free college, wiping out education loans, and many new grads who expect high salaries when hired. This is why many dislike capitalism - because capitalism is driven by innovation, hard work, long hours and often low pay - but with the potential to go as high as your talent can take you. No, not everyone will be superstars; but because many kids have been told "you're special" when they may not be (except in the eyes of their parents) their whole lives, and have been allowed to succeed at everything - because failure was never part of the program - they see a life that they're told would be better in a socialist system. The reality of that idea is crazy because in socialist societies there is never parity - the people at the top live like kings (which in reality they are) and the rest of the people live like serfs - which they also are. Unfortunately, in socialism not everyone wins - and those not related to the leaders in some way are doomed to be serfs their whole life. In capitalism *anyone* can rise to the top and *anyone* can stay at the bottom - but it's up to the individual, nothing else. Rich kids can become bums and poor kids can rise to the top - on their own talent and desire.

Rant Off,

My greatest incentive to get an education was within me - I WANTED it; I
wish every child, every teenager could have at least a little bit of that
intense desire for an education that I had. That's what growing up on
tenant farms in eastern NC did for me. If every teenager had just a little
bit of that desire that I had, there'd be NO truancy and discipline
problems, and we would not have enough schools and teachers, but the
teachers would find it a Helluva lot easier to teach.

Mom and Dad never had much money or material things, but probably one of the
greatest things they gave me, other than life itself, was a sense of
integrity - to be able to what is right when nobody else is watching.

You're assuming standardized test scores are a valid measurement of
successful teaching.

Alex

And that it's a causal relationship.
