My first car was an '84 Ford Tempo, feel free to roll your eyes but as far as 
really cheap cars go it was pretty okay.
Mine had a 4spd manual and 2.3l 4cyl which I understand was built in 
conjunction with Mazda as many small Ford's of the period were. It was actually 
a really good engine...

"Real" car makers understand the complexities of globalization and realize that 
sometimes it makes more sense to pay somebody else to manufacture something for 
you, especially when its a low end product and doing so allows you to focus on 
higher end product.

Well that's great that you're open minded. I'm not when it comes to these 
things. A serious manufacturer makes it's own engines. Mercedes has gone down a 
declining path of no return. It's really too bad.
