I had an uncle who flew in a Lanc during the war...rear gunner. The guy had lots of stories, some great, some not so great. One mission, the plane was pretty shot up, and the floor of the rear turret was shot out. As he tells it, he had his legs dangling out during the flight home. Flying over the water and looking down, he told me he kept thinking, "higher, higher!"
I also have a friend who flies. He too can't get on a chair to change a light bulb, but no problems flying. Doesn't seem to be that uncommon amongst pilots.
