My neighborhood is all older houses, a very common upgrade here is to drill
1.5" holes through the clapboards on the outside of the house and spray foam
into the cavity. That was done at some point on my house. Actually on mine they
pulled the clapboards, did the foam through the outer wallboard, then wrapped
it in tar paper and 1/2" foam, the kind with foil on the outside, and finally
vinyl siding. They shot some foam into the attic too but its crumbled badly.
When I did the bathroom I took out blocks of foam that resembled floats under a
dock. I'd guess the stuff in the attic was killed by UV, we have several
windows up there and it gets a good amount of sunlight.

The lack of insulation makes for old house charm. :-)

Back then fiber glass didn't exist. In some rural areas, houses were
clapboard siding, studs, and tongue and groove or simply pine boards on the
inside with a tin roof. Exterior clapboards may never have been painted.
Wood stove inside, possibly serving double duty as a stove. The ground
level floor could have been supported with slabbed tree trunks, leveled
with a bottle.
