I used a 5 gal plastic gas jug which collapsed partially. So if you are going to create a vessel it needs to be pretty strong to withstand even a small vacuum....

Which is why I like Grants suggestion which allows the fluid to run through the pump and only the tubing using the vacuum..

I used to use a five gallon bucket as a topsider before. The shop vac creates enough suction to collapse the bucket.
