I'm not sure why, as later models used an external microswitch to sense the 
lock position. You couldn't get stuff on it from spraying the cylinder down if 
you wanted to.

For that matter, W123, W124 and W126 models didn't do anything with the alarm 
and lock cylinders that I know of, unless it was the ignition cylinder.
