I wonder if there are both sealed beam and bulb in housing lamps by different manufacturers that fit the standard 123 headlight/fog light assembly?

Well thats just weird...

Anybody else want to weigh in on this? I completely sure none of my 123 cars has had
sealed beam lights, theres a bulb held in by a little wire clippy. I'll take a picture
when I get home tonight. My '78 240D has clear "driving lights" my '83 240D had
yellow. My wagon had clear but I converted to yellow because I like the look of them. I
was going to convert the '78 but Dwight talked me out of it. His CD has one of the yellow
ones from my '83 240D.

Dr. Fatty's site shows (for an '83 240D anyway) exactly what I'm talking about.
It looks like he wants to sell the whole assembly but the bulb is not sealed
into the lens.

Thats what "sealed beam" means right? Where the bulb is sealed into the lens,
like the headlight...

i had to replace a fog light in our '85, and it was a sealed beam. i'm
fairly certain it was a plug-in deal.

quotes for replacements were rather high a few years ago, and i
heard a story about how there was something used in the manufacture of
them that had since been qualified as a "hazardous material" and that
was why they now cost so much. IIRC, this related specifically to the
yellow ones (which i thought started somewhere around 1982).

i was lucky enough to find a decent replacement at a local MBZ
shop. were i to need to replace one again, i would give serious
consideration to just wiring in a set of small modern lamps, but i'd
miss the look of those old yellow things.

cheers!

Gerry,

I've never seen a 123 with sealed beam fog lights. All of them were bulb in
housing. I've had 3 personally ('78 240D, '81 300TD and '83 240D) plus Dwight's
300CD and the '82 240D I took parts from in a junkyard.

Are your existing lights yellow or clear? I wonder if somebody subbed in
headlights or some other kind of lights.
