or 3 raids, each in a different state. A single raid can be taken out when the controller fails.
Our RAID is purely software, built into Mac OSX. You can take one of the disks and put it into any SATA Mac and read it, no problems. Though not the highest-performance solution, it was the cheapest, and likely to be the most reliable long-term.
