Looks a local candidate (who is expected to become the next sheriff) gave
Facebook members the wrong impression too:

"County Democratic leaders are in an uproar over a Facebook post made by a
candidate for sheriff of Citrus County insinuating that a cardboard cutout of
Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton be used for “target practice.”
(See cutout on link.)

On Sunday, Michael Klyap Jr. shared an Aug. 5 photo from the Citrus County FL
Democrats Facebook page featuring the Clinton standee. The post was advertising
the availability of lawn signs for supporters of Clinton.

When Klyap shared the post on his personal Facebook page, which is public, he
added a comment: “Need a back stop.”

Klyap, who is running as a no-party candidate, commented a few minutes later on
his post, saying: “Klyap for Sheriff will be holding a shoot for the star
pistol competition in the near future. Start collecting your back stops. We
will have the targets.”

Klyap told a Chronicle reporter on Tuesday his comments “weren’t meant to be
derogatory,” adding that backstops can be used “to stop anything,” from a
baseball to a soccer ball.

“It’s not intended to be used for shooting at Hillary Clinton,” he said. “They
could do the same thing with a Trump poster.”

Responding to a post from a follower suggesting he remove his “shoot for the
star” comment, Klyap wrote: “Back stops could be anything. Not necessarily a
Hillary poster. Thanks for watching my back.”

Klyap acknowledged his Facebook readers may misinterpret what he posted
earlier, but won’t delete it from his page.

“If it’s misconstrued, I’m not going to apologize,” he said. “I don’t have any
problems for what I say — that’s my First Amendment right.”

Other comments on the picture include: “I could use a new target for my
firearms” and “Bow practice target.”

Wendy Williams, chair of the Citrus County Democratic Executive Committee, said
Klyap made it “quite clear” what he thinks the cutout should be used for.

“He thinks Hillary should be used for target practice,” said Williams, who was
notified soon after Klyap shared her organization’s photo.

“It shows lack of judgment and a lack of leadership for somebody running for
public office, especially for somebody running for sheriff,” she said.

Klyap said he does not believe his comments will affect his race for sheriff,
and will leave them up for the people to interpret.

“The people are going to judge what’s on the post,” he said.
