Packing it in a good strong box or crate is the correct way to ship. If done properly there should be no damage. I would expect it to be damaged otherwise. You have to realize that in most cases your item will be passed from truck to warehouse to truck etc, etc until it arrives at its destination. Trucking/shipping happens fast and I know of no truck driver that will miss stops (and revenue) to give your package special treatment. It can be handled as freight should be if packed properly. I also know of no trucking outfit or freight insurance provider to cover damage to a poorly packed item. It is the responsibility of the shipper to send it the right way.
