You are ABSOLUTELY correct. I WORK for UPS and I see this stuff EVERY DAY.
If you ship auto body parts this way they are more likely to get there
intact than if you wrap them like china. If you want to be ABSOLUTELY SURE
that your stuff gets there intact with UPS, insure it for $5000. That will
put it into the "High Value" category, and it WILL get treated with kid
gloves.
Me too, Earth City, MO. You're near Chicago, right? CACH?
Standard-sized, boxed packages are thrown onto converyor belts which
ferry them through the hub, where all sorts of bad things can happen in
the event of a jam. Upon reaching the loading dock, they may be loaded
on the top or the bottom of the trailer, where they may or not be
crushed, depending on luck and packaging quality. Irreg items (big,
unboxed, or over 70 lbs) are carried through the hub on a cart where
they won't be smashed or thrown about. They're the last thing loaded in
the trailer and are never stacked, so you really are safer shipping
unboxed. This is all academic, though, as a rear hatch is big enough
that it qualifies as an irreg whether boxed or not.
Tom,
Uses lots of bubble wrap and packing peanuts
