Don't try to get the torque converter into the transmission when bolted to the 
flywheel, you will surely break the front pump.  Been there, done that, even 
with the proper methods.

Take the TC back off and install it properly in the transmission, sliding it 
all the way back.  This will be half an inch or so further than it sits when 
bolted up.

Install tranny, making sure that the TC stays free of the flywheel, the pry it 
forward and bolt it up.  If you pull the housing bolts up tight without the 
drive lugs on the TC properly seated, you fracture the drive ring on the front 
pump and the transmission has no fluid pressure at all.  

My brother managed to break his in the SDL, cost him another couple hundred 
bucks for the transmission shop to replace it.
