Bought 2012 MBP for college unit, specifically because it was the last mobile
upgradeable device from Apple that had no reliability concerns. Non-retina,
no auxiliary GPU. At the time it was the oldest thing they made that was fully
supported. It has since been abandoned by Apple, but should be able to
serve out its four-year hitch running on Catalina.

I have my dad's 2018 MBP. Nice enough unit, but I now rarely use it in favor
of the MP 5,1 upon which I type this. It is reserved for on-the-road needs.
I can also jack it (and its dock) into this desktop array, so I can use the big
monitor and ergo keyboard if I need to, via the KVM switch. (Backup system,
since I rely upon this MP for work.)

Can you _make_ yourself a space? I acquired a very small old wooden desk,
top surface 30x16.5", to make a MP workstation upstairs. Finding an old chair
narrow enough to go into its footwell took a bit of looking, but once set up
this all
occupied a not very big piece of wall in the corner of the dining room.
Retired it
once full-time WFH kicked in, and I revamped the computer room and moved
in there. (Had to displace the big Trinitron monitor, and the G3 and ADB
keyboard,
which tells you how long ago it had been set up. Also de-fanned the 24x7 gear
that lives in here with me, making life much more pleasant. The MP's own fans,
capable of floating the MP out of the room if on high, never come off idle.)
