HA HA HA HA!

“Dealer discounts” are often a total screw. They’ll quote you list plus 20% and
then give you a 10% “courtesy discount” to make you feel like you’re getting a
deal.

They all do it, even mine. I caught them doing it to a coworker one time. He
bought a neighbor’s SLK230 for one of his kids. He asks me about doing an oil
change on the car, and I told him it’s relatively straightforward, but to buy a
filter from the dealer, not FLAPS. His kid calls the dealer’s parts counter and
hey quote him $18. Now I know darned well the oil filter for an SLK230 is not
$18 list, so I told him to ride along with me at lunch one day when I went to
pick up parts.

We get to the dealer and I told him to go up to the counter in front of me. He
asks for the part, they look it up, and quote him $14. I stepped up and
questioned the parts guy. “Really? That’s a $12 filter, list price.” They sold
it to him for $10, the jobber (my) price, because they got caught trying to
scam the guy.

As crappy a practice as this is, there’s nothing illegal about it. There is
certainly an ethical issue here, but again, this is a car dealer. List price is
nothing more than reference point for discounting, and is not a retail or fixed
price. The dealer can charge whatever they want for a part, as Mercedes cannot
set the retail price, only the price the dealer pays them.
