Pretty sure you can always tell if the compressor hub is spinning, vs not. Pistons gotta pis, so if they're moving so is fluid. If it won't build pressure either the one-way valves or shot, or the expansion valve is so open that no pressure is built.
At its heart, AC is extremely simple, mechanically.
