We had a rental car a couple of years ago that had the auto stop and start feature. It was a Chevy Malibu if my memory serves to be correct.

It was actually very seamless. I didn't realize it was doing it for a time. Stop at a light and the motor would shut off. Lift your foot off the brake and it would start and be running ready to go before I had my foot back on the gas pedal.

I see no point to it and assume it would put a lot of strain on various components but I was amazed at how smooth it was. Of course, we are talking about a new vehicle with hardly any miles on it. Who knows what it would be like as it got older?
