I have no where near the knowledge or experience that some of you have with electronics and computers etc., BUT I do have a Hallicrafters Shortwave Receiver on a shelf in my basement and it still works.

Well, WE really had it toof! 110 baud on a tin can with a string using
a teletype with a worn out ribbon, and WE LIKED IT!!! ;D

(ectually, 300 baud on an old TRS-80 Model 100 portable, and when I got
an external 1200, that was BLAZING FAST! )
When I was a sophomore in college, I set up my Hallicrafters SX-38C and
tuned in a shortwave teletype news station. I then fed the audio to a
diode and a very sensitive relay and used the relay's contacts to provide
power to an ASR-33's input.

When tuned properly (with the correct part of the audio shift keying set
to zero beat), the teletype printed out the news, even before radio and
television stations broadcast it.
