Question: Does the rule apply here as it does with my 240D - the one
that says do not add engine oil until the level gets down to the add
mark (in other words, don't add when it's half way between the full
and add marks?)

Now I have another thing to turn more hair grey. When I start the
engine, I hear the tappets knock (hope that's good terminology for a
diesel). And the oil gauge takes a lot longer than I want to respond -
maybe some five seconds. When the gauge does respond, the engine idle
slows a bit maybe, and the tappet noise lessens.

Now, I notice that there seems to be a tappet noise constantly as it
idles in my driveway. Unless it's an exhaust leak, but I doubt it.
I'll drive it and see how long it persists - maybe is lessening as the
engine warms up?

I appreciate all advice here - these are big questions in my mind as I
hope this is not a lemon.
