I've heard a very high % of new students entering college must take remedial classes in English and math to do the most basic of things before moving to college level classes. Seems like the % was between 50% and 80% -- can;t recall. This after many colleges have reduced their standards for various reasons over the years. The govt doesn't have a good record for many of the things they do - govt run education is another of the things they do poorly, IMO.
