Maybe, but then maybe the key did get sucked into the oil pump after
wearing through the screen.

Another list member mentioned that it's not like a defect from the
factory & he's probably right. More than likely, someone had the head
off at some time & dropped the cam key into the engine. Then instead of
doing the right thing & pulling the pan, he just figured that the oil
pump screen would stop any damage.

Many years ago, I was working on a friend's 1971 220D. We were advancing
the engine so that we could check timing chain stretch & I immediately
noticed that the master link keeper was missing from the timing chain.
The master link was being held in place by grooves worn in the posts.

I told him that we had to pull the lower pan and he responded with "why,
won't the screen block the part"? We pulled the pan & found the keeper
inbedded in the screen & it was well worn into the pickup screen. I
don't know how many miles it would have taken to wear through but given
time, the keeper (or what was left of it) would have been sucked into
the oil pump.
