Dear me, all those quotes from Andreas and me do get rather confusing, so to try and
consolidate all the confusion I'm quoting your post in full here and am going to try
to respond to your questions as best as I can figure. ready? :-)
First off, I confused things in my post by mistakenly referring to GVP I/O prefs as
GVP Serial Prefs. These are two seperate pieces of software which come bundled with
both the standalone GVP I/O Extender and the version I have that caused all the
problems, the integrated version only to be found on the GVP G-Force 040 extender for
the A2000. OK. So, no one knows why, but the GVP SERIAL Prefs (which sets the baud
rate, or is supposed to) program will only work in a video mode and less than 8-color
Workbench. So if you are a gfx card owner using, say, a 16-bit VGA mode for your
Workbench, the program won't open and will bog everything down until a reboot. To make
it even more confusing, AFAIK this flaw is only to be found in the version GVP Serial
Prefs program that came with the G-Force, NOT the I/O Extender.
Alright, so we're done with the Serial Prefs. The GVP I/O Prefs program, which is used
to redirect program calls from the internal Amiga serial and parallel ports to the
faster ones on the G-Force, DOES open and function with no problems. My deal with
Miami that Andreas confirmed was that Miami could not talk to the fast serial port on
the G-Force using its direct serial driver, "gvpser.device." Instead, I had to tell
Miami to talk to the Amiga's native serial driver, "serial.device," but since GVP I/O
Prefs was running, Miami's call was redirected to the desired device, the fast serial
port on the G-Force. Result? It works! MiamiDX can now dial out through my modem and
communicate with my ISP. The only problem that happens is after I sign off and hangup,
the "TR" (terminal ready) light on the modem stays on, and if I want to connect a
second time, I have to turn the modem off and on again or else I get an error.
Genesis has the advantage of being able to talk to the "gvpser.device" directly, and
has no problems resetting after hangup. Sadly it has no SSL module for it, not to
mention no upgrades until Vapor resolves its legal dispute with the programmer. But
Andreas said that in his case, Genesis didn't work either. My best guess is that this
is caused by idiosyncracies of the circuitry on our respective boards.

Is it a problem with the mode being used, or the mode being requested?
I.e. can it be promoted?

Does this mean *without* redirecting it, i.e. using the real internal
serial? If not, what was different between the two attempts?

I'm not sure that's what he meant. I doubt that the redirection approach
would work better, since the problems depend on which driver is being
*used*, not which one is being *requested*. I could imagine it working
*worse* in the redirected case, though, if the GVP driver doesn't handle
EOFMODE correctly, since serial.device *does* handle it correctly and the
"auto" setting would assume that.
