I'm not sure I agree with that.

Many years ago I went to buy a washer and after looking at the units for
awhile the salesman asked me if I had any questions or had picked out a
unit. I told him I thought we would take the GE unit as it was about 25 or
30 dollars less than the other unit we were looking at but I thought buying
a GE over an XXX was a good idea. He told me he thought I needed to buy the
slightly better unit. Figuring he was trying to make more money I asked
him to prove why. He tipped up the xxx unit and told me to do it and then
did the same with the GE. The GE was much lighter. He told me that they
walked across the floor and there was a modification GE did to stop that.
He undid the back and there inside the unit was a cinder block!! No
kidding, really. The cheapest is sometimes the cheapest for a reason.

I have to say I'm amazed at all the washing machine passion/info here on the

We replaced a worn out Amana W/D set with a Kenmore Front loader set about 5

Set works fine, love them and would do it again. We have ours stacked and
we have no walking issues. A little noisier than a top load. The thing
that is missed is the ability to soak something in the tub before starting
the wash cycle. The washer is probably a little slower but our dryer is
super fast, I know probably nothing to do with the front load washer.

We have had a set of Kenmore Elite front loaders for about 7 years. Not sure
who made them as I don't believe Kenmore actually makes appliances. No
mechanical issues except that the door handle on the dryer broke a few years
back. I did a temporary fix with some rubber hose until we could order the
parts to fix it, but it remains to this day as it works very well....plus
I'm lazy. This set gets a lot of use as our kids come in to use it on a
regular basis. The washer cycle does seam to take slightly longer than our
old top load unit, but this is not an issue for us.

This is a personal consumer/user question regarding front loading clothes
washing machines.

I know many testing organizations compile lists of Best Buys based on
features and the results of short term, limited testing, but the reports of
those LIVING with and USING a machine provide a lot of very useful data for
the propsective purchaser.

Has anyone had ANY brand of front load washing machine (and dryer, for that
matter) that has been, for a year or more, Pain Free (no repairs, no balance
problems, no problems getting clothes clean, no control malfunctions), and
the machine hasn't had problems that could not readily be resolved under
warranty, or by owner or technician provided service if out of warranty?
Has anyone had a recent acquisition (say, less than 3 years) NOT cost them a
large sum of money in repair or parts costs?

I have a 17 year old top load Maytag that could now use a number of
replacement parts (things do wear out over time and with heavy use), so I'm
considering a new "better" washing machine (although some needed parts are
still available through ApplianceClinic.com, a good source). From what I've
read while researching washers on the web, NONE of the new models from ANY
manufacturer seem to last more than a few weeks before something goes wrong.
Seriously! If you go to ConsumerAffairs.com and search on any brand washer,
you'll be confronted with so many horror stories that you may NEVER feel
confident about spending cash on a new machine. There are nearly as many
horror stories about warranty and service repairs, as well.

Therefore, I'd like to know if there is anything really positive to be said
by consumers about modern clothes washing machines in regard to durability
and / or the manufacturer's acceptance of responsibility to the consumers.

Thanks,

Jerry aka LGO
