Maybe you should take a look at Kommander. With Kommander you can create GUIs to scripts and commandline tools within minutes, without doing any C/C++ programming. You can do almost everyting with just plain Bash. Really great for experimenting with GUIs. Have a look at my personal website as well, it contains a lot of info about the scripts and Kommander GUIs that I'm working on:
