yeah, splitty refers to 49-67 split windshield buses and loaf (bread loaf)
refers to 68-79 buses

>But WTF is a crotch cooler? Do I even want to know?!

here's a little blurb I stole from

http://www.unaids.org/kabrioletts/gallery/kseume/1950s.html

As far as the body was concerned, several changes were made throughout the
1950s, some small, some of greater significance. One of
the first was the inclusion of opening vents in the front quarter panels
intended to aid ventilation. First seen from chassis number
1-0221638 (January 1951), these vents were soon nicknamed 'crotch
coolers', and not without reason! The problem was that, when open,
they allowed a substantial draught of air to strike the occupants where
they least wanted (or expected) it! These vents were dropped in
October 1952, when opening quarter lights ('wind wings') were first
introduced on all models, including the cabriolet, the latter again
     starting with body number 10969.

I tired to find a pic of some, but they're REALLY hard to see when closed and I
couldnt find any pics of them open, but if you look at this drawing, you can
see where they were located. You'd push a lever inside the car and they'd
swing out to open up to vent air in.
