The tire pressure that was recommended was correct - 45-50 psi is good for
street tires at an autocross.  If you weren't smooth and thus plowing like a
farmer, that would explain the chunking.  If you rolled an inch onto the
sidewalls, you were going into the turns WAY TO HOT and plowing like mad -
this would have happened regardless of your tire selection.  Next time try
more negative camber and slow down - the old adage is "slow down and you'll
go faster"

Driving on a race track is much easier on tires b/c they aren't being used
to the maximum of their cornering ability throughout the duration of each
run.  Also, the higher speeds let the tires slide a bit more, thus
transfering more of the wear to the center of the tire than to just the
edge.
