When I had my cluster apart to fix the speedo, I decided to go for flexibility, and replaced the bottom row of dummies with 5 dual red/green LEDs. There's just enough space in there to wire them up to a ribbon cable. On the other side of the cable is a DB-9 connector, now accessible from below the dash.

One LED is now wired to WOT, as for the other 9... I had this brilliant plan... They were going to outlaw radar detectors over here... so I was going to do a stealth install... hack a detector apart, mount the guts in the engine bay next to the radiator, and rig the display to use my LEDs in the cluster. But then the government preempted it by backing off, so I never got around to actually doing it. Anyone have any ideas for alternative applications? 5 red LEDs and 4 green ones, at my command?

While we're on the subject of cluster mods, I also upgraded the high beam indicator -- the stock setup uses a plain old filament bulb with a blue filter cap. I replaced that with a 5mm blue LED: looks better and lasts forever (Not that I ever heard of that particular bulb burning out, but still...) If you do this, you also need to trace its power lead on the PCB, and splice in a 1K resistor (there's a convenient spot for it right next to where the resistors for the stock LEDs are.)

And yeah, I replaced the top instrument bulbs with high-power white LEDs (with a blue filter strip), and some bright red (AlInGaP) LEDs for the clock/MFA backlight. Also inverted the clock display while I was at it (black background, red digits). What can I say, I had too much time on my hands back then... but it looks damn good now. Plus, I don't have a single filament bulb left in the cluster, so I hope to never have to take it apart again.

Cheers,
Oleg

Nice job Denis. I need to take my dash apart to replace the instrument
lights anyway. I'll have to rig a regular led in there because the '88
models don't have the oxs reset circuit.

Anyone know the replacement light bulb part numbers for the instrument
lights?

Rich,
Below are two pics of my LED indicator light, to show
when my TT box is actually working...
