If all you want is grip and TONS of it, give the falken azenis a shot. My
second set just came in the mail... $204 to my door for 195/60-14's from
tires.com. Really stiff sidewalls, huge tread blocks, and the softest
compound out of any "street" tire you'll find anywhere. :) These tires are
almost to the level of my toyo RA-1's in the level of stick they have.
They're also dead silent in the turns.. not a peep from them. They're
_very_ progressive at the limit, so much so that you have to work on
noticing how your car is driving as to not over-drive the tires. Downsides?
not so good in the wet. They work ok, but with tread blocks as big as your
hand they won't be great rain performers. They are LOUD. I never thought
of tires as being loud until I got these, but there's a noticable whoosh
from them when you're on the freeway. Mine lasted probably a good 8000
miles of really hard driving before they started to really fall off... i
stretched them out about another 4000 miles before they were completely
bald.

A couple other options are the bridgestone RE730 and the S-03 pole
position... if marshall still checks this list I'll let him expand on that
(he has used both on his GTI.)

If you really "love" the P7000's then you will want to marry what ever tires
you get next. In my experience the P7000's had good traction under braking
and in the rain, but just generated more NOISE than lateral G's when going
through corners.

my work truck. The (now discontinued) AVS Intermediate was the best
bang-for-the-buck tire I have ever driven on. I liked them quite a bit more
than the Kumho 712s I replaced them with(on my old '91 Jetta). When it
comes time for me to go back to my summer wheels (on the '88), I'll be
ordering a set of AVS ES100s to replace the near-bald set of AVS
Intermediates on there now. Every set of Pirellis I've had has given me
less-than-expected performance for the price.

even at the limit, plus an excellent price and a tread life that far exceeds
it's rating(go easy on the burnouts). I would expect no less from the AVS
ES100s.

Didn't feel as stable when pushed, and was a bit noisy at the limit.

the money and look elsewhere. I believe they have been discontinued anyway.

better or worse, but other options.
