last time i had my exhaust replaced, it was cheaper to have a straight pipe
put on than buying a new cat (which was shot)
the engine isnt knocking or clunking like it does with bad mounts, i had a
16v with bad mounts. Its all smooth, just exhausts start to come apart too
often.

Exhaust isnt anything fancy, decent muffler with dual tips exiting. Nothing
rice. I hate rice.

as far as opening the car up, I run Castrol GTX 10-40 in it (high mileage
version) and run 92-93 ocatane gas most of the time. The engine makes a very
high pitched rapid pinging sound in excess of 4000rpm so i dont hot hod it.
My other 16v with less mileage didnt do this. I know how the engine works,
but im not brave enough to work on it myself. It would seem to me that the
rapid high pitch pinging was from the valves floating at higher rpm's
because the value springs arent closing them fast enough anymore. Ive seen
higher tension value springs advertised before which led me to this thought.
(though im probably wrong) - The engine almost has 160,000 miles on it and
has never been rebuilt. When i had my suspension, exhaust, mounts, and
axles/cv's replaced last summer, while picking up the car, the mechanic
mentioned to me that from what he could tell, whoever had this thing before
me drove the holy pants off it.

I read on this mailing list about year ago someone commented that solid
front mounts are more stable, but there is noticably more vibration, which I
wouldnt prefer.
