No, it definitely doesn't brake lists! Posters who choose one of those broken clients (regarding mailing list usage) will have to fiddle with reply-to all and mangling the posters address - their problem. I think we've to decide what we want to be the aim of Mailinglist communication. I definitely prefer to have our systems serving efficient communication. That's crucial for successful and joyful community work. If we target to serve best the less suited mailclients I doubt we appoach the efficiency target best. Why? I notice many people complaining their habits not beeing served well. After my observation and experience most effective communication is based on awareness of the participants to not waste lots of other people's time by doing sloppy work creating their mails. So in fact we should aim to promote that awareness rather than encouraging people to foster their habits. The key is to make them turn their heads to the comunity rather than the other way round. > And even many of our admins don't manage to use the "reply to > list" feature, sadly. :-) Not talking about webmail like Google, that > breaks things even more. So You propose to support those, fostering bad habits and broken mailclients and make life harder for those who don't. The wrong signal I think. > What experiences did others make? >> So simply "answer" will answer the author wherever she likes, "answer to >> list" will do as described. All lists, or only a > set of lists? I vote for all lists, because the above is valid for all of them. But well, I admit as long as we lead unexperienced users looking for support on a mailing list (which I consider not beeing a good solution), we should think about making that one an exception (and thus making life harder for those *giving* support).
