Hi Adrian,
First of all, I would agree with Andy's earlier comments and would just like
to pass on my experience and opinion on the ECU change. I can't comment on a
knock sensor.
Up until July this year I had a standard Morgan system on my 3.9 hotwire
97+8, ie ECU, air filter, manifolds, cat and exhaust. I was not 100% happy
with the general running and acceleration and it was suggested (by someone I
have great respect for) that the Tornado chip would help to improve this but
wouldn't give any extra BHP or MPG. I decided to go ahead and had the chip
replaced, the result was a definite improvement with a smoother tick over
and a noticeable improvement to the acceleration in the lower rev range. I
have no hard facts to back this up, but this is my perception and I should
also add that SWMBO commented on the better sound of the exhaust on my
return from having it fitted.
When the chip was being fitted and checked out on the diagnostic system it
was noticed that one of my injectors was functioning slightly below par but
it was nothing significant to worry about. However as we was about to go on
a tour of the Italian lakes within two weeks I decided to replace all the
lucas injectors with bosch ones. I believe that this improved the smooth
running even more and slightly improved the MPG. I should hasten to add that
the my consumption has improved by about 1 MPG which wouldn't justify the
cost of replacing injectors alone. We clocked 2.8K miles during our tour of
the Italian lakes and the overall consumption worked out to be 28.4 MPG.
I am now extremely happy with the performance and don't plan to make any
further changes in the future other than where it's absolutely necessary.
Incidentally, because there has been no increase in the BHP with this
upgrade, my insurance has remained the same.
As to the question "was it worth it"? That is very subject, but to me it
was.
Hope this has been of some help to you.
Regards,
Allen

Subject: [mogtalk2] +8 to chip or not to chip

Hi

I am sure this may have been asked before but advise would be appreciated.
To my 96 3.9L +8 I have fitted librands twin stainless exhausts and
manifolds, and a K&N filter this has improved performance but I understand
the engine can run a little lean plus the torque curve can be improved with
an ECU CHIP change, either Optimax or Tornado. Also I believe that Vauxhall
knock sensors can be fitted that turn 90 degrees and clear the new
manifolds.

Can anyone tell me their experiences with either chips and/or knock sensor
and what you think. Is it worth it, impact or improvement on fuel etc.

Regards,

Adrian
