I see lit circles as being the best choice for students who have developed  
solid strategic reading skills.  So in a second grade class you may have one 
lit circle and 2-3 guded reading groups and in a fourth or fifth grade, you may 
have one GR group with 2-3 lit circles.  I encourage teachers to move into lit 
circles with guided support when they feel the students have enough skill to go 
it alone partially.  Just like learning to talk...it's approximated in the 
beginning!
