Here's my shopping list of technology-independant wants for a CMS.

1. Tracking of content pieces by unique id.

Basic inventory management.

2. No implicit structure in storage of content pieces.

Basic design freedom to slap navigation, hierarchy,
aggregation and miniportals on top of content
for a special event or for the next millenia.

3. Separation of public interface from
   editorial interface.

d.m.o is an output of editorial, not entangled
with it. Add content via the back-door.

4. Simple file formats for submissions.

   Force non-layout, non-style contributers to
focus on their words and examples.

5. Enough file formats to be practical.

Encourage contributors to contribute.

6. 80% of versioning pushed out into contributor land.

   Don't micro-manage versions of content that isn't
fit for readers to see. Some special cases.

7. Support reader feedback.

Capture comments by readers on what they've read.

8. No-brainer processes.

It should be trivial to use.

9. Web log analysis tools.

What content are readers reading?
