Got any statistics on how many people really did switch? You're 
forgetting that IE's rise coincided with an explosion in Internet usage. 
New users are the easiest target, and growth will continue worldwide for 
some years.

Cars are a very poor comparison. People don't buy a house and use 
whatever car comes bundled with it. Cars don't get revised after they're 
shipped (aside from recalls).
