Thanks for the investigation! That's good information about the reason for
the lack of kerning in FreeSans. Also good advice about the string to test
with. You are of course correct that VA is an easy case to test. But
FWIW, I found that this pair will *not* kern for me if I build
FreeSerif.ttf using the OpenType option. "rj" kerns, but neither "Va" nor
"Te" do. Only by turning that option *off* can I get a version of
FreeSerif I build myself to kern fully. This is Ubuntu 14.04 with Qt 5.4.
Same for FreeSans, but I didn't try moving the tables around, because I
have no idea how to do that.
In any event, I have submitted PR
https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/pull/1506 that includes two version
each of FreeSerif, FreeSerifBold, and FreeSans. The regular version with
OpenType *off*, the Mac version with OpenType *on*.
