I'm jumping in a little bit late but here's my $0.02.

Being able to download songs from MPD would be a useful, but  
inappropriate, feature.  MPD is a first and foremost a music player.   
It is not, and in my opinion should not be made into, a file server.

Yes, it would require that users find other solutions.  Sometimes  
people have to do work to achieve their goals, and that's OK.

Small, sharp tools are best.
