That code looks quite good now! I've added a few minor fixups, and merged your code. I noticed that it breaks mplayer, it's reporting end of file before actually playing anything. VLC works. We should now fix all problems with major client software before the alpha2 release. I've also added the test program ./test/run_input, which you might find useful for debugging your code.
